Core Aeration & Overseeding in Northwest Ohio
On clay, compaction — not fertilizer — is what limits most lawns. Pulling cores fixes the cause, and September is when to do it.

On Northwest Ohio clay, compaction rather than nutrition is what limits most lawns — roots occupy the top inch or two and the turf has no reserve when heat arrives. Core aeration pulls plugs out, creating channels for air, water and seed. Do it in early fall, overseed the same day into the open holes, and topdress with a quarter-inch of compost.
If a lawn on Northwest Ohio clay browns first in July and recovers last in September, the problem is almost never nutrition. It is that roots have nowhere to go.
What compaction actually does
Clay particles pack tightly under mowing traffic, foot traffic and the sheer weight of rainfall. Pore space collapses. Without pore space there is no oxygen, and without oxygen roots stop growing downward.
A lawn with roots in the top inch and a half has no reserve. The first hot dry week exhausts the available moisture and the turf goes dormant. Water it more and you are just wetting the same shallow layer. Fertilize it and you are feeding a plant that cannot use what it is given.
Why cores, not spikes
Spike aerators — the shoes, the tow-behind spike rollers — push soil sideways and downward. On clay that makes compaction worse, not better.
A core aerator pulls plugs out of the ground and drops them on the surface, physically removing soil and creating open channels. Those channels let air, water and amendments reach the root zone. The plugs break down over a couple of weeks and return to the surface as a light topdressing.
When to aerate in Northwest Ohio
Early fall — September into early October. Cool-season turf is in its strongest growth phase, soil is still warm, moisture is more reliable, and any seed that goes down has six to eight weeks to establish before dormancy.
Spring aeration is acceptable if fall is impossible, but it comes with a real trade-off: opening the soil in spring creates ideal germination sites for crabgrass, and it disrupts pre-emergent barriers. Fall has none of those drawbacks.
Overseeding: getting seed to actually germinate
Seed needs soil contact. Broadcasting seed onto an intact lawn puts most of it on top of the existing turf canopy where it dries out and never germinates. That is why so many DIY overseedings fail.
Overseed immediately after aerating
Seed dropped right after coring falls into the open holes, which is exactly the soil contact and moisture protection it needs. Do it the same day, not a week later once the holes have closed.
Or slice seed
A slit-seeder cuts shallow furrows and drops seed directly into them. Germination rates are dramatically higher than broadcasting, and it is the best tool for thickening a thin but otherwise intact lawn. We use it constantly on properties in Deshler and across Henry and Putnam counties where compaction has thinned the stand.
What seed to use here
A blend dominated by turf-type tall fescue, with Kentucky bluegrass included. Tall fescue roots deeper, handles our summer heat and clay far better, and tolerates wear. Bluegrass spreads by rhizomes and self-repairs, which fescue does not do.
Shaded areas get fine fescue added. Below about four hours of filtered light a day, no turf will hold and a mulched shade bed is the honest answer.
Topdressing: the step most people skip
A quarter-inch of screened compost spread after aerating and seeding works organic matter down into the open channels. On clay this is the mechanism that actually improves soil structure over time, since you cannot till an established lawn.

Aftercare for the first three weeks
- Keep the surface consistently damp until germination — light watering once or twice daily, not deep soakings.
- Once seedlings are up, shift to deeper, less frequent watering.
- Do not apply broadleaf herbicide for at least four weeks; new seedlings will not tolerate it.
- Mow when new grass reaches about three and a half inches, with a sharp blade.
- Keep the leaves off. Seedlings smother fast under leaf cover.
How often
Annually on heavy clay or high-traffic lawns. Every other year on lighter soils with modest traffic. On the sandy Oak Openings soils around Swanton and Whitehouse, compaction is far less of an issue and aeration matters much less — there, building organic matter is the priority instead.
