That is the argument for a fire pit that has nothing to do with looks. You are buying months.
One of our clients put it plainly after we finished their fire pit area: it became the space the family actually uses. That is the outcome we design for — not a photograph, a place people sit in on a Tuesday.
Getting an outdoor living space right
The difference between a patio people use and one they walk past comes down to a few decisions made early.
The space is too small to actually sit around
A fire pit needs roughly a seven-foot clear radius from the flame edge for chairs plus a walk-behind path. A forty-eight-inch pit in the middle of a twelve-by-twelve patio leaves nowhere to put a chair.
Wrong location relative to the house and wind
Fire features need clearance from structures, overhangs and low limbs, and they need to sit where prevailing wind is not pushing smoke onto the deck or through a window.
No seating other than what you carry out
Built-in seat walls mean the space is ready without hauling furniture. A seat wall at eighteen inches with a wide cap doubles as a table edge.
Nothing to define the space
A patio in the middle of open lawn feels exposed. Low walls, a pergola, plantings or a grade change give it edges, and edges are what make a space feel like a room.
Wood versus gas decided too late
Gas requires a line run before the hardscape goes in. Deciding after the patio is built means cutting it open. Decide early even if you install later — we will sleeve for it.
What we build
Wood-burning fire pits
Block or natural stone with a steel insert ring to protect the masonry from heat cycling. Simple, inexpensive to run, and the smell people actually want.
Gas fire pits and fire tables
Natural gas or propane with a code-compliant burner, air mixer and shutoff. On instantly, off instantly, no smoke and no ash — the practical choice for a patio adjoining the house.
Outdoor fireplaces
A vertical fireplace with a chimney is a bigger statement and a windbreak. Requires a real footing and gets designed with the patio, not added to it.
Seat walls and pillars
Built-in seating, defined edges, and pillars that can carry lighting or hold a pergola beam.
Outdoor kitchens and grill islands
Framed and veneered islands with counter space, storage and appliance cutouts, plus the gas, electric and water runs planned during construction.
Pergolas and shade structures
Set on proper footings below frost depth so they do not lift over winter. Wood, aluminum and louvered systems.
From idea to first fire
1. Talk about how you will use it
Six people or sixteen? Dining or lounging? Grill in it or beside it? These answers set the footprint before anything is drawn.
2. Site and size the space
We lay out the patio and fire feature on the ground with paint and stakes so you can walk it and put chairs in it before we excavate.
3. Confirm clearances and utilities
Setbacks from structures, overhead limbs, gas line routing and any local requirements checked before the plan is final.
4. Build the patio base
Same standard as any hardscape we install — deep compacted base, geotextile, correct pitch. The fire feature sits on its own compacted footing.
5. Masonry and finish
Fire feature built, seat walls set and capped, lighting installed, then polymeric sand and final compaction.
6. Walkthrough
We show you burner operation and shutoff on gas units, hand over care instructions, and light the first fire with you.
What outdoor living projects cost
A simple wood-burning ring on an existing patio and a full outdoor kitchen with a pergola are two orders of magnitude apart. These are the drivers.
- Fire feature type
- A wood-burning block pit is the entry point. Gas adds burner assembly, line and permitting. A full fireplace with chimney is structural masonry and the largest step up.
- Patio size around the feature
- Most fire pit projects are really patio projects. The pit is a fraction of the cost of the space it needs.
- Seat walls and pillars
- Priced by face footage and capped separately. Excellent value per dollar because they add both seating and structure.
- Utilities
- Gas line length and routing, electrical for lighting or appliances, and water for a kitchen sink all carry trade costs.
- Appliances and finishes
- The single widest range in the whole project. Grill, side burner, refrigeration and countertop material can exceed the cost of the structure they sit in.
- Overhead structures
- Pergolas require footings below frost depth and, in many jurisdictions here, a permit.
Build the patio and the base infrastructure once, and phase the finishes. Sleeving for gas and running conduit during the initial build costs very little and saves cutting into finished hardscape later.

Footprint painted and staked on the ground so you can walk it and put chairs in it. Undersized fire pit patios are the most common regret we hear about, and this is how you avoid one.
Gas decided early, not later
A gas line has to be run before the hardscape goes in. Sleeving during the base build costs very little; cutting into finished pavers two summers on costs a great deal.
Built on the same base as any patio
Deep compacted base, geotextile, correct pitch, and the fire feature on its own compacted footing. A fire pit is masonry sitting on hardscape and it moves if the base does.
Clearances and ordinances checked
Setbacks from structures, decks and overhanging limbs vary by township, and some villages restrict open burning outright. We confirm yours before siting anything.
