We work the whole city, from the older neighborhoods around Fort Defiance and the Defiance College area to the newer subdivisions on the south and east sides, plus the townships out toward Ayersville, Evansport and Sherwood.
Getting here: About 20 minutes east of the shop on OH-18.
Two very different drainage situations in one city
Properties near the Maumee and Auglaize sit on alluvial soil that can drain surprisingly well at the surface while the water table sits high enough that a French drain has nowhere to go. On those lots we often build up rather than dig down — raised beds, surface swales, and pipe carried to a genuine outlet rather than a dry well that fills and stays full. Higher ground away from the rivers is the more familiar Northwest Ohio clay, where the fix is positive grade and buried downspouts. Same city, opposite solutions, which is why we shoot elevations before quoting anything here.
Older Defiance homes and mature tree cover
The neighborhoods around the historic core have full canopy — big maples, oaks and sycamores that were planted a century ago. Mature shade is worth protecting, but it changes everything about turf: bluegrass will not hold under a dense canopy, root competition dries the top few inches of soil, and fall leaf volume is several times what an open lot produces. On these properties we usually recommend a fine-fescue blend in the shade, a two-visit fall cleanup rather than one, and honest conversations about which areas should be a mulched bed instead of a lawn nobody can keep.
Commercial work along the US-24 and US-127 corridors
Defiance carries real commercial and industrial traffic, and we maintain grounds and run snow contracts along those corridors. Commercial priorities here are the same as anywhere: entrances presentable, walks and ramps cleared before the doors open, and documented service records for winter. What is specific to Defiance is wind and lake-effect timing — storms can arrive here differently than the forecast for Toledo suggests, so we watch pavement temperature locally rather than trusting a regional number.

Why Defiance property owners choose us
This is our home ground
Defiance sits inside the counties we work every week from Hicksville. That shows up most in winter, when distance decides whose driveway gets cleared first.
We fix the water before anything else
Every dollar spent on plants or hardscape sitting on ground that stays wet gets spent twice. On Defiance County soil we diagnose drainage first — and often the honest answer is two downspouts rather than a system.
