A retaining wall in Ohio is a structure holding back tons of saturated clay, and what goes behind the block decides its lifespan. Every wall we build gets a compacted crushed-stone leveling pad, perforated drain tile with a positive outlet, a minimum twelve-inch zone of clean angular stone wrapped in geotextile, and geogrid into compacted fill on anything with real height.

Most leaning walls we get called to replace were built with soil backfilled directly against the block. Clay holds water, water adds weight, freezing adds pressure, and the wall walks forward a fraction of an inch every winter until the courses separate.

We build with a compacted base leveling pad, clean drainage stone behind the face, a drain tile at the base with a daylight outlet, geotextile to keep soil out of the stone, and geogrid reinforcement into the retained soil on anything with real height. It costs more. It is also the difference between a wall and a pile of block.

When a slope needs a wall

Not every grade change needs engineering. These are the conditions where a wall is the right answer.

  • You cannot safely mow it

    A slope steeper than roughly three-to-one is dangerous with a walk-behind and impossible with a rider. Terracing turns that ground into level, usable, plantable space.

  • Soil is washing onto the driveway or patio

    Visible erosion channels and mulch on the concrete after every storm mean the slope is actively losing material. A wall plus proper planting stops the loss.

  • An existing wall is leaning, bulging or separating

    A wall that has rotated forward at the top or where courses have opened up is failing, not settling. It will not correct itself, and pressure only increases with each wet season.

  • You are losing usable yard to grade

    A walkout basement, a sloped side yard, a patio that wants to be six feet wider than the ground allows — a wall buys you flat square footage that did not exist.

Wall types we build

  • Segmental block walls

    Engineered modular block with a built-in setback and a lip or pin system. The workhorse for residential walls in this region — strong, consistent, and available in colors that do not look like a parking lot.

  • Natural stone walls

    Weathered limestone and fieldstone laid dry or mortared. Slower to build and more expensive, but nothing else looks right against an older farmhouse or a wooded lot.

  • Boulder and armour stone walls

    Large stone set with a machine. Excellent for larger grade changes and rural properties where the scale suits it, and often faster than block for a comparable height.

  • Terraced multi-tier systems

    Two or three shorter walls stepped back rather than one tall one. Often better looking, sometimes cheaper, and the terraces become genuinely useful planting beds.

  • Seat walls and freestanding walls

    Non-retaining walls that define patio edges, screen equipment, or add seating. Built with a capstone course and a proper footing so they do not wander.

  • Wall repair and rebuild

    We assess whether an existing wall can be reset or needs to come down. Sometimes only the top courses need to be pulled and the drainage corrected behind them.

How we build a wall that holds

  1. 1. Assess height, load and soil

    We measure retained height, look at what is above the wall (a driveway or a pool changes everything), and check the soil. Walls over four feet, or any wall carrying a surcharge load, get engineered drawings.

  2. 2. Excavate and build a leveling pad

    We excavate below the frost-affected zone and place a compacted crushed-stone leveling pad, then bury the first course — typically one-tenth of the wall height or a minimum of one full course.

  3. 3. Drain tile and clean stone backfill

    Perforated drain tile set at the base of the wall with a positive outlet to daylight, then a minimum twelve-inch zone of clean angular drainage stone behind the block, wrapped in geotextile.

  4. 4. Geogrid reinforcement

    On taller walls we lay geogrid at specified course intervals, extending back into compacted structural fill. This is what converts a stack of block into a reinforced soil mass.

  5. 5. Backfill and compact in lifts

    Compaction happens in lifts behind the wall with a plate compactor, never with a heavy machine right against the block face.

  6. 6. Caps, grading and restoration

    Caps adhered with masonry adhesive, grade above the wall pitched to shed water away from the top, and disturbed areas seeded or sodded.

What determines retaining wall cost

Walls are priced by face square footage — height times length — not by linear foot alone, because a wall twice as tall is far more than twice the work.

Wall height
Height drives excavation depth, base thickness, geogrid requirement and whether engineering is needed. Ohio jurisdictions commonly require an engineered design and permit above four feet of exposed height.
Block or stone selection
Standard split-face block, premium multi-piece systems, and natural stone represent a wide material range. Natural stone also carries higher labor.
Drainage requirements
Every wall we build gets drain tile and clean stone. Where there is a spring, a seep, or a wall holding back a wet slope, that system gets larger.
Excavation and spoil
Cut walls generate a lot of material to haul. Fill walls require imported structural backfill. Both cost money before a block is set.
Access and staging
Block is heavy. If pallets can be set near the wall by machine, the job moves. If everything is hand-carried through a gate, labor climbs sharply.
Steps, curves and corners
Curved walls, inside and outside corners, and integrated steps all require additional cutting and layout time.

We put the drainage detail in writing. If a bid does not mention drain tile, clean stone backfill and geotextile, you are comparing two different products at two different prices.
