Five Landforms, One State

Why our area pages are not copy-and-paste

Ohio is not one landscape. Five distinct physiographic regions run through it, and each one changes the drainage design, the base depth and the plant list.

Huron–Erie Lake Plain

Defiance, Paulding, Henry, Putnam, Wood, Lucas, Van Wert and the rest of the northwest

The drained Great Black Swamp. Dense lacustrine clay with very slow infiltration and almost no natural fall — water has to be moved deliberately with pipe and grade, and a dry well is a hole that fills and stays full.

Central Lowland till plains

Columbus, Dayton, Springfield, Marion and most of west-central Ohio

Glaciated till: workable, moderately drained, and generally good ground to build on. The limiting factor is construction compaction rather than the soil itself, which is why new-build lawns here never thicken until the subsoil is opened up.

Glaciated Allegheny Plateau

Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Youngstown, Geauga, Portage and the northeast

Kettle-and-kame country. Soil can change completely across one lot — gravelly till on the rise, saturated muck in the hollow forty feet away — so one drainage design will not serve a whole property.

Unglaciated Allegheny Plateau

Athens, Zanesville, Marietta, Portsmouth, Steubenville and the southeast

No glacier ever flattened this ground. Thin soil over sandstone and shale on steep slopes, so level ground is built rather than found and retaining structures come before planting.

Bluegrass / Lexington Plain

Adams, Brown and eastern Clermont counties

Limestone close to the surface, so soil depth varies by feet within one property and pH runs alkaline where it thins. Clay over shale on cut slopes creeps, and given water it slips.
