Northwest Ohio moves. Frost depth here runs past thirty inches, and our lake-plain clay holds water — which is what actually causes heave. Water in the soil freezes, expands, and lifts anything sitting on it. The fix is not thicker pavers. It is a base that drains and a subgrade that is compacted in lifts.
We build patios, walkways, steps and seat walls the way they are supposed to be built, and we will show you the base before we lay a single paver.
Why hardscape fails in Ohio — and what we do differently
Almost every failed patio we replace shows one of these four things. None of them are the paver's fault.
Shallow base
Four inches of stone is a walkway spec in Georgia. In Defiance County it is a guarantee of settlement. We excavate to twelve inches or more and build back with six to eight inches of compacted crushed limestone, placed and compacted in lifts of no more than four inches.
No geotextile between clay and stone
Without fabric, clay pumps up into the aggregate every wet season until the base is mud with rocks in it. A roll of woven geotextile is cheap. Rebuilding a patio is not.
Water routed under the patio
A downspout discharging beside a patio slab saturates the base every storm. We tie downspouts into solid pipe and carry the water past the hardscape before we build on top of it.
Joint sand instead of polymeric sand
Standard sand washes out, weeds take the joints, and the field loses interlock. Polymeric sand hardens, sheds water, and keeps the pavers acting as one surface instead of a few hundred loose bricks.
Hardscape work we install
Paver patios
Concrete pavers, tumbled stone, and large-format slabs in running bond, herringbone, and random ashlar patterns. Herringbone anywhere vehicles cross — it locks against shifting far better than a stack bond.
Walkways and front entries
A four-foot walk feels generous and lets two people walk side by side. Anything narrower reads as an afterthought. We set walks with proper cross-pitch so ice does not sheet across them.
Steps and stoops
Solid block or natural stone treads with consistent riser height. Uneven risers are the number-one trip hazard we find on older properties.
Seat walls and pillars
A seat wall adds permanent seating without furniture and defines the edge of a patio. Column caps and lighting can be integrated during the build instead of retrofitted later.
Permeable paver systems
Where runoff is the constraint — tight lots, township restrictions, or a patio that would otherwise dump water toward a neighbor — permeable systems let stormwater pass through into an open-graded base.
Repairs and re-levels
Not everything needs a tear-out. If the base is sound and only a section has settled, we lift, re-screed, reset and re-sand at a fraction of a full rebuild.
How we build a patio that stays flat
1. Layout and utility locate
We mark the footprint, confirm elevations against the house and door thresholds, and call in public utility locates before any excavation.
2. Excavation
Typically twelve to fourteen inches below finished grade for a patio, deeper where soft subgrade shows up. Spoil is hauled off, not spread over your lawn.
3. Subgrade prep and geotextile
Subgrade compacted, then woven geotextile laid to separate clay from aggregate permanently.
4. Base in compacted lifts
Six to eight inches of dense-graded crushed limestone placed in lifts and plate-compacted. We check for pitch as we go — a minimum of one-eighth inch per foot away from the house.
5. Bedding sand, laying and cutting
One inch of screeded bedding sand, pavers laid to pattern, then cuts made with a wet saw for clean edges.
6. Edge restraint, polymeric sand, compaction
Spiked edge restraint around the perimeter, polymeric sand swept and vibrated into the joints, then activated with water. Your patio is usable the same day.
What a paver patio costs in Ohio — and what changes it
Anyone giving you a square-foot price over the phone has not seen your grade or your gate. These are the variables that actually determine the number.
- Paver selection
- Standard concrete pavers, tumbled or textured units, and large-format porcelain or natural stone sit at very different price points. Material can swing a project cost by half on its own.
- Excavation depth and disposal
- Deeper excavation means more spoil hauled away and more stone brought in. Soft clay subgrade sometimes requires over-excavation and additional base.
- Access for equipment
- Machine access to the back yard cuts labor dramatically. A narrow gate or a fenced yard means base stone moves by wheelbarrow — figure on days, not hours.
- Pattern complexity and cuts
- Herringbone, circle kits, borders and curved edges all add cutting time. A simple running bond with straight edges is the most economical layout.
- Elevation change and steps
- A flat pad is straightforward. Once you need steps, retaining, or a raised patio, structural work is added to the scope.
- Add-ons built in during construction
- Seat walls, fire features, lighting sleeves and gas lines cost far less installed during the build than retrofitted afterward.
We put the base specification in writing on every hardscape proposal — depth, material and compaction. If a competing bid does not state theirs, that is the question worth asking.
