Paver Patio Base Depth for Ohio Freeze-Thaw

That patio will crack within three winters if the base is not at least eight inches of compacted gravel. We have torn out enough of them to know.

A paver patio in Ohio needs six to eight inches of compacted crushed limestone over woven geotextile, with total excavation of twelve to fourteen inches and compaction in lifts of no more than four inches. Frost depth here passes thirty inches and clay holds the water that drives heave, so a four-inch base — adequate in warmer regions — guarantees settlement.

Almost every failed patio we tear out in Northwest Ohio failed for the same reason, and it is never the paver. It is what is underneath.

Here is the mechanism, the specification that prevents it, and the four questions to ask any contractor bidding your project.

What frost heave actually is

People assume frost heave is frozen pavers expanding. It is not. It is the soil beneath them.

Water held in soil freezes and expands roughly nine percent. In fine-grained soils, the process goes further — freezing draws additional moisture upward to the freezing front, forming ice lenses that lift everything above them. When it thaws, the ground settles back unevenly. Do that thirty or forty times across a winter and a surface built on it goes wavy.

Frost depth across Northwest Ohio runs past thirty inches. And our dense lake-plain clay is exactly the kind of soil that holds the water that drives the process. That is why patios here fail in ways they do not in sandier regions.

The base specification that works here

You cannot excavate below frost depth for a patio — nobody digs a three-foot hole for a paver field. What you can do is build a base that does not hold water and does not consolidate.

Excavation: 12 to 14 inches below finished grade

For a residential patio. More where soft subgrade shows up. Anything carrying vehicle loads gets more still. Spoil should be hauled off, not spread across your lawn.

Geotextile between clay and stone

A woven geotextile separates the clay subgrade from the aggregate base. Without it, clay pumps up into the stone every wet season until the base is mud with rocks in it. A roll of fabric is inexpensive. Rebuilding a patio is not.

Six to eight inches of compacted crushed limestone

Dense-graded crushed limestone — angular material with fines that lock together, not round pea gravel that rolls. The angularity is what makes the base act as a single mass.

Compaction in lifts of no more than four inches

This is where corners get cut invisibly. A plate compactor cannot densify eight inches of stone dumped at once — the bottom half stays loose and consolidates later under load. Placing and compacting in lifts is slower and it is the difference between a base that holds and one that settles in year two.

Pitch: minimum one-eighth inch per foot away from the house

Established during base construction, not corrected with bedding sand at the end. A patio that drains toward the foundation is a problem you will be dealing with every spring.

One inch of bedding sand, screeded — not more

Bedding sand sets the pavers; it does not level the base. Thick sand beds move. If a contractor is using two or three inches of sand to correct an uneven base, the base is the problem.

Edge restraint and polymeric sand

Spiked edge restraint around the perimeter keeps the field from spreading. Polymeric sand in the joints hardens, sheds water and prevents weeds — standard sand washes out by the second spring and the field loses interlock.

The other failure nobody looks for: water routed under the patio

A downspout discharging beside a patio saturates the base every storm, and no base specification survives that. Roof water needs to be tied into solid pipe and carried past the hardscape before anything is built on top of it.

This is one reason we handle drainage and grading as part of hardscape projects rather than as a separate conversation. Building a correct base and then letting a downspout soak it is money wasted.

Four questions for any patio bid

  1. How deep are you excavating, and where does the spoil go?
  2. How thick is the base, what material, and is it compacted in lifts?
  3. Is geotextile included between the subgrade and the base?
  4. What joint sand is used, and what is the plan for roof water near the patio?

Every one of those answers should already be written in the proposal. If a bid states none of them and comes in noticeably lower, you now know why.

Can a settled patio be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes. If the failure is localized and the surrounding base is sound, the affected pavers can be lifted, the base corrected, and the units re-screeded, reset and re-sanded at a fraction of a full rebuild. We cover when that is worth doing in repair or replace your patio.

When the whole field is wavy and the base is four inches of dumped stone with no fabric, patching buys you a season. That is the point at which rebuilding to a correct specification is the cheaper decision over ten years.
