Soil and drainage in Galion
Bed preparation is where till-plain projects are won. Compost worked into the top ten to twelve inches across the full bed area, the grade raised a few inches where drainage is marginal, and root flares set at finished grade rather than buried. Plants installed that way need a fraction of the aftercare.
The grade near the house is the cheapest thing to get right and the most expensive to ignore. Ground within ten feet of a foundation should fall roughly six inches; on older properties decades of settlement have often reversed that, and it is the most common cause of the damp basements we get called about.

Material choice shifts with the thermometer. Standard rock salt loses effectiveness around 15°F, and below that treated salt or a calcium or magnesium chloride blend is what actually melts anything. Applying more rock salt in those conditions wastes product and damages concrete.
