The same things drive it here as anywhere in Ohio: access for a machine, how deep the hardscape base has to go, whether drainage has to be solved first, plant size at installation, and how much has to be removed before the new work starts. Hardscape and drainage want dry, workable ground — roughly late March through early December here. Planting is strongest in early fall, September through mid-October, when roots get six to eight weeks in warm soil before dormancy. Lawn seeding is best mid-August through late September. We schedule each part of a project for its own window rather than doing everything at once.

Almost always trapped water. If the wall was backfilled with soil instead of clean drainage stone, every wet season builds hydrostatic pressure behind it and freeze cycles push it out a little at a time. Once courses have rotated or separated, correcting the drainage alone will not pull it back.

Kettle-and-kame ground. A kame rise carries gravelly, sharply drained till while the kettle beside it holds saturated organic soil. That is normal here and it means one drainage design will not serve the whole property — we probe before designing rather than assuming.

It depends on the species. Yew, boxwood, lilac, forsythia, spirea, privet, dogwood and viburnum tolerate hard rejuvenation pruning and come back well. Juniper, arborvitae and most conifers will not push new growth from bare old wood, so once they are hollow inside, replacement is the honest answer.
