Soil and drainage in Lyme
Till soils here drain better than the lake plain, so a French drain usually has somewhere to discharge — which makes drainage design more straightforward than it is further north. The trade-off is excavation. Till carries gravel, sand lenses and cobble mixed through the clay, so a patio dig can hit a seam that drains beautifully or a cobble layer that slows the machine to a crawl. We price hardscape here after seeing the site rather than off a formula.
Because a drain here usually has somewhere to go, subsurface solutions genuinely work — perforated pipe bedded in washed stone and wrapped in filter fabric, carried to a real outlet. Skip the fabric and it silts shut within a few years.

Totals here run well above the rest of the state, events arrive faster than a regional forecast suggests, and a single push at the end of a storm is not adequate service. Agreements should specify a trigger depth in writing, return passes during prolonged events, and de-icing material chosen by pavement temperature — standard rock salt stops working around 15°F, which happens repeatedly here.
Spring repair is part of the job. Gouged lawn edges and a dead strip of turf along the drive every April are signs the property was never staked and the salt rate was never calibrated. Both are avoidable and both should be put right by the contractor who caused them.
