Soil and drainage in Pike
Planting into this clay by digging a hole and backfilling with good soil creates a bathtub: water flows in from the surrounding clay and cannot drain out, and the plant slowly drowns across two seasons. We amend a broad bed area instead — compost worked into the top ten to twelve inches — and raise the bed grade a few inches so roots sit above the seasonally saturated zone.
