The advantage of till country is that a drain usually has somewhere to go. The catch is excavation: till carries gravel, sand lenses and cobble, so what comes out of a trench is far less predictable than the flat clay further north.

Soil and drainage in Scott
Bed preparation is where till-plain projects are won. Compost worked into the top ten to twelve inches across the full bed area, the grade raised a few inches where drainage is marginal, and root flares set at finished grade rather than buried. Plants installed that way need a fraction of the aftercare.
The grade near the house is the cheapest thing to get right and the most expensive to ignore. Ground within ten feet of a foundation should fall roughly six inches; on older properties decades of settlement have often reversed that, and it is the most common cause of the damp basements we get called about.

Salt damage compounds if it is never addressed. The dead strip of turf along a drive gets a little wider each spring, and the fix is calibrated rates, salt-tolerant planting in the first few feet, and repairing the edge each year rather than watching it spread.
