Soil and drainage in Alpha
Beds on till respond well to amendment because the base material is workable to start with. Compost worked into the top ten to twelve inches across the whole bed, a defined spade edge, and two to three inches of hardwood mulch gets most properties most of the way there. Where the grade falls toward the house, that gets corrected first — everything else sits on top of it.
Because a drain here usually has somewhere to go, subsurface solutions genuinely work — perforated pipe bedded in washed stone and wrapped in filter fabric, carried to a real outlet. Skip the fabric and it silts shut within a few years.

Every proposal we send states the specification rather than implying it — excavation depth, base material and thickness for hardscape, pipe size and outlet for drainage, and a plant schedule with species, install size and mature dimensions. If a competing bid states none of those and comes in lower, that difference is usually the reason.
Winter in Alpha
De-icing matters more than plowing on a typical winter here, because the freeze-thaw cycle produces more ice events than deep snow. Material should be selected by pavement temperature and applied at calibrated rates — over-salting damages concrete, kills the turf edge along drives and costs money for no benefit.
Salt damage compounds if it is never addressed. The dead strip of turf along a drive gets a little wider each spring, and the fix is calibrated rates, salt-tolerant planting in the first few feet, and repairing the edge each year rather than watching it spread.
