Soil and drainage in Brookside
Beds on till respond well to amendment because the base material is workable to start with. Compost worked into the top ten to twelve inches across the whole bed, a defined spade edge, and two to three inches of hardwood mulch gets most properties most of the way there. Where the grade falls toward the house, that gets corrected first — everything else sits on top of it.
The grade near the house is the cheapest thing to get right and the most expensive to ignore. Ground within ten feet of a foundation should fall roughly six inches; on older properties decades of settlement have often reversed that, and it is the most common cause of the damp basements we get called about.

The most valuable thing on most of these lots is the mature trees, and they are the easiest thing to damage by accident. Mulch piled against a trunk holds moisture on bark and encourages girdling roots that can kill a maple twenty years later; the root flare should always be visible. Trenching or grade changes within the root zone do damage that does not show for years.

The winter work that protects a landscape is mostly done in November: leaves off the turf so it does not mat under snow and grow snow mold, evergreens watered deeply before the ground freezes so they have a reserve to draw on, drive and walk edges staked, and drainage outlets cleared so meltwater has somewhere to go in February.
Salt damage compounds if it is never addressed. The dead strip of turf along a drive gets a little wider each spring, and the fix is calibrated rates, salt-tolerant planting in the first few feet, and repairing the edge each year rather than watching it spread.
