Frost, water and slope all act on the same structures here, which is why hardscape built to a flatland specification does not survive. Base depth, drainage behind walls and footings below frost are not upgrades in this country — they are the job.

Soil and drainage in East Akron
Soil here can change completely across one property. A kame rise carries gravelly, sharply drained till; the kettle beside it holds saturated organic muck that stays wet into June. We probe before designing, because a single drainage approach applied across both will fail on one of them. Where the hollow cannot be drained, we design for it — raised beds, species that tolerate periodic saturation, and hardscape sited on the better-drained ground.
Frost depth combined with a high water table is hard on anything shallow. Footings for pergolas and freestanding walls go below frost, and planting beds get built up a few inches so roots sit above the seasonally saturated zone.
