Soil and drainage in Far East
Beds on till respond well to amendment because the base material is workable to start with. Compost worked into the top ten to twelve inches across the whole bed, a defined spade edge, and two to three inches of hardwood mulch gets most properties most of the way there. Where the grade falls toward the house, that gets corrected first — everything else sits on top of it.
Where a property was recently farmland, the plough pan is worth knowing about — a compacted layer left at old tillage depth that roots struggle to cross. Breaking it before establishing turf saves years of a lawn that never quite thickens.
