Soil and drainage in Hemlock
Cut-and-fill is the recurring project. A usable patio or a flat lawn panel on a hillside means retaining the cut properly and compacting the fill in lifts rather than dumping it and hoping. Fill placed without compaction settles for years and takes whatever is built on it along.
Anything cut into a hillside needs drain tile and clean angular stone behind it with a positive outlet. Water moving through shale is what walks a wall forward, and no amount of block quality substitutes for somewhere for that water to go.

Salt damage compounds if it is never addressed. The dead strip of turf along a drive gets a little wider each spring, and the fix is calibrated rates, salt-tolerant planting in the first few feet, and repairing the edge each year rather than watching it spread.
