Plant choices for the coldest corner of the state
Northern Williams County sits at the cold end of USDA zone 5b, and open exposure makes it feel colder than the number suggests. Marginally hardy plants that survive in Toledo or along the lake will not reliably survive here. We plant to zone 5 with margin rather than pushing zone 6 material and hoping for mild winters. Where a homeowner wants something borderline, we site it in a protected microclimate — an east-facing wall, inside a windbreak — rather than out in the open.
Windbreaks that actually work
A windbreak is not a row of arborvitae along a property line. Effective windbreaks are planted in staggered rows with enough spacing that the row still functions at mature size, using species that hold their lower branches — Norway spruce and white pine rather than arborvitae, which browns on the windward side and is the first thing deer strip in a hard winter.
